MODULE 1 DISCUSSION
In this module, we covered rhetorical purpose, as well as the seven elements. You may choose to write about either the rhetorical purpose of your first artifact or one of the seven elements.
The Six Rhetorical Purposes
If you choose to write about the rhetorical purpose, identify which of the six rhetorical purposes is best found in your artifact. The six rhetorical purposes are:
Creating virtual experience
Examine your rhetorical artifact in light of one of these six rhetorical purposes. Which of the six best fits? There may be more than one purpose, but in this writing exercise, focus on just one. So:
Claim that X type of rhetorical purpose was used.
Offer proof of that in your rhetorical artifact – why can you make this claim?
Tell me how well your artifact puts this rhetorical purpose to use.
The Seven Elements
Of the seven elements, two are of interest for this assignment:
Persona. The role the persuader takes in addressing the audience. Think of things like good cop/bad cop; teacher; friend; pastor; reporter; clown; etc.
Tone. The persuader’s attitude towards the subject (Detached, emotional, satirical) AND the audience (Personal/authoritative/supplicant).
If you choose to write about the seven elements, complete a critical equation on EITHER Persona or Tone for your rhetorical artifact. So:
Claim that X type of persona or tone was used.
Show proof of that in your artifact—why can you make this claim?
Finally, tell me how well your artifact puts this persona/tone to use.
Write your initial post, examining your artifact, paying close attention to each step of the critical equation. Please stay within 90-120 words (1 point will be deducted for every 5 words over or under this limit).
Employ the power of written rhetoric. Craft your critique carefully, with an eye to the economy of language (avoid using two words when one will suffice), and precision in each step of the critical equation (be clear on your claim; be exacting with the proof you offer in support of that claim; be specific with your evaluation).
